Materials and methods: This study was of the observational, descriptive, transversal, and prospective type. The sample was made up by 60 lateral head radiographs distributed between 30 class I (ANB 2°±2° and class I malocclusion) and 30 skeletal class II radiographs (ANB&gt;5° and malocclusion class II-1). Measurements of the airway space in the oropharynx and nasopharynx were taken in mm through the McNamara method on lateral head radiographs. Results: The average space found in the oropharynx in class I was 11.71mm ± 3.18mm. In the class II group, it was 10.73mm ± 2.36mm. No significant differences were found (p=0.18). The average space found in the nasopharynx in the class I group was 18.45mm ± 4.11mm. In the class II group, it was 19.10mm ± 3.89mm. There were no significant differences found (p=0.53). Conclusion: The airway space in mm. of the nasopharynx presents similar values in millimeters in subjects with Class I and Class II skeletal malocclusion. There is no difference in the airway spaces of the oropharynx in subjects with Class I and Class II Malocclusions.</p> 2022-12-27T00:00:00-05:00 Copyright (c) Effectiveness of piezoelectric versus straight hand piece at low speed within the surgical extraction of retained lower third molars 2023-01-04T14:32:01-05:00 Bryan Morales-Sambachi Adriana Andrade-Peñafiel <p><strong>Objective:</strong> Determine the effectiveness of the piezoelectric handpiece vs. the straight handpiece at low speed in surgeries of impacted lower third molars, in relation to post-surgical effects (edema, pain and trismus) and the operative time of the osteotomy, in patients attending the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the “Hospital de Especialidades Fuerzas Armadas N°1”. <strong>Method:</strong> It is an observational, longitudinal prospective cohort clinical study. A sample of 40 patients of both sexes aged between 18 and 25 years was taken, divided into two groups of 20 patients each, in group A extractions were performed with piezoelectric and in group B with straight rotary handpiece at low velocity. The results were analyzed on the third, fifth and eighth day, the edema was measured with the method of Amin and Laskin, for the pain the Visual Analogous Scale (VAS) was used, and for the presence of trismus with the instrument foot of king.&nbsp; Results: In group A, edema (11.72 mm), pain (4.67) and mouth opening (39.49 mm) were lower than in group B edema (12.29 mm), pain (4.8) and mouth opening (35.83 mm) and osteotomy time was significantly longer with piezoelectric (6.54 ± 3.05 min) compared to the straight handpiece (1.55 ± 0.57 mm). min) and there was a difference in edema, pain and trismus under normal conditions in contrast to what was obtained at 3, 5, 8 days between the two instruments. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> the post-surgical effects of edema, pain and trismus of the extraction of retained lower third molars are less intense with the piezoelectric compared to the straight handpiece, the use of the piezoelectric being recommended.</p> 2022-12-27T00:00:00-05:00 Copyright (c) Effect of molar incisor hypomineralization on oral health related quality of life in children and adolescents: a systematic review 2022-12-28T18:51:17-05:00 Camilo Romo Pérez Luis Lobo Cortés María José Morales Rojas Alma Luz San Martín López Karem Guadalupe Ramírez Vera <p><strong>Introduction</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Hypersensitivity, altered dental appearance and fractures are common problems in molar incisor hypomineralization that generate functional and socio-emotional problems. </span><strong>Objective</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">: to evaluate the effect of MIH on oral health-related quality of life in children and adolescents. </span><strong>Materials and methods:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> A systematic bibliographic search was carried out in electronic databases (Pubmed, Epistemonikos, Dentistry &amp; Oral Sciences Source and Virtual Health Library). Observational studies in English or Spanish conducted between 2016-2022 that evaluated the quality of life of children and adolescents with molar incisor hypomineralization were identified. </span><strong>Results</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Of 96 identified studies, thirteen were included in the synthesis. The most frequent diagnostic criterion for hypomineralization of molar incisors was the index of the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and nine studies reported the severity of the disease. The most widely used scale to measure quality of life was the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ). According to the children's perception, the most affected dimensions were "Oral Symptoms" and "Emotional Well-Being", according to the parents they were "Oral Symptoms" and "Functional Limitations". It is diagnosed by radiographic measurement of the alveolar bone level, with or without clinical symptoms of inflammation and a probing depth greater than 4 mm. The objective of this work was to review the scientific evidence on the prevalence, etiology, predisposing factors, clinical behavior and imaging characteristics of PI. An electronic search was carried out in Google Scholar, PubMed and Scielo, considering the period between 2010-2022, and a total of 40 articles were selected. It is concluded that the main etiological agent of PI is the biofilm, however, its appearance and severity may be associated with the presence of predisposing factors such as Diabetes Mellitus, smoking, pre-existing periodontal disease and absence of keratinized mucosa, among others. Clinically, PI is related to bleeding on probing, gingival recession, and suppuration. Among the main barriers faced by this community are the lack of communication, shortage of health services, added to the inexperience and lack of knowledge of sign language by the health professional. This article aims to raise awareness of the importance and need of sign language in dental clinical care and professional training, as well as strategies, tools and recommendations for better care for deaf people. Databases such as SciELO, Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect were included during the years 2007 and 2021 It was concluded that the main barriers during communication are the little knowledge of sign language in dentists, the little access to interpreters and difficulties in obtaining appointments; affecting the susceptibility to develop oral diseases. The inclusion of sign language courses within the university curriculum provides academic and professional ethics benefits; however, followup is necessary to confirm compliance with the requested parameters. Among the main tools<br>and strategies, the use of educational videos, the accompaniment of interpreters and, in view of technological development, the use of mobile applications, can facilitate communication. The symptoms they produce are ambiguous and their diagnosis depends on the combination of multiple clinical and imaging factors. Among the diagnostic studies available to establish the origin of the symptoms is the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The objective of this case report is to describe the strategies used in the acquisition and interpretation of the CBCT in three patients with suspected root fractures.
