Abstract

The marine coastline of Metropolitan Lima extends for 83 km and comprises a marine and coastal ecosystem situated within 13 districts. This area has been affected by the inappropriate dumping of construction and demolition debris (CDD), generated during the construction of buildings and infrastructure. This article describes the factors associated with the inappropriate dumping of CDD and the consequences of such dumping for the coastal marine ecosystem. Also, through environmental complaints obtained, it has been established that municipal authorities violate current regulations by committing acts involving the final disposal of CDD. Finally, recommendations are proposed for improvements in the management and handling of CDD in Metropolitan Lima.
