Abstract

Direct planting of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is a method that is currently used very little in afforestation programs; however, this technique is a very effective alternative, with results similar to those obtained with indirect planting, even more so if the mahogany species are installed in agroforestry systems, that is, in association with transitory crops.

The direct planting of mahogany in agroforestry systems with transitory species allows the mahogany seedling a favorable development during its first stages of life, due to the microclimate that is obtained with transitory cultivation. In the present study, the reasons for using this technique in the Peruvian Amazon are justified with examples. This type of planting generates conditions similar to those of a forest nursery, reducing costs, time and inorganic waste, in addition to improving the results of reforestation actions.
