Abstract

Today, the mass use of artificial light sources makes it possible to engage in range of activities. However, it may also lead to disturbances in the behavior of insects adapted to changes in natural light. The aim of this study was to gather evidence of the effects of artificial light on insects from the order Coleoptera. The results showed sensitivity to light due to the photoreceptors possessed by beetles. We identified repercussions at individual, population and community levels. These effects have implications for lighting management in the contexts of ecological conservation actions, pest management and medical research. We concluded that the potential effects could include biodiversity loss, if lighting management is not properly applied.
