Current status of populations of the Peruvian thick-knee (Hesperoburhinus superciliaris) (Tschudi, 1843) (Aves: Burhinidae) in airports of the central and northern coast of Peru

Abstract

The distribution range of the Peruvian thick-knee (Hesperoburhinus superciliaris) encompasses arid coastal areas from southern Ecuador and Peru to northern Chile. The aim of this study was to contribute to knowledge of H. superciliaris across its distribution range and to understand variations in its population at airports along the central and northern coasts of Peru. Between 2008 and 2025, field observations were conducted on its behavior, distribution, seasonal movements and conservation status, and systematic censuses were conducted at six airports, using binoculars, auditory recordings, recognition of indirect evidence (footprints, feathers, roosts and nests) and photographic documentation. The censuses were carried out along access routes to the sampling points, following trails established by the airport administration, at a distance of at least 50 meters from runways, adjacent roads or open areas with shrubby vegetation. The results obtained indicated that Pisco airport has the largest population of the species, followed by Trujillo, while the airports with the smallest populations are Talara and Tumbes. We can therefore conclude that the bird hazard index is highest for the airports of Pisco, Trujillo and Piura.
