Abstract

American oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) are very sensitive shorebirds, considered of "Least Concern" (LC) according to the list of endangered wildlife species in Peru. Their annual breeding season extends from August to February; however, information related to breeding records for this species in Peru is scarce. This study confirms and documents the first breeding record for H. palliatus in the southern area of the district of La Punta, Callao, Peru. This record was made through direct observation on three occasions (February 1st, 8th and 20th 2024), using binoculars during occasional monitoring in the La Arenilla area. Parental behavior was documented in all four stages: egg laying, incubation, hatching and chick rearing. In addition, the presence of a nest was recorded in the area, with the observer approaching the spot, where he confirmed the presence of two eggs inside the nest. The documenting of this type of biological activity is of utmost importance for future management and conservation planning, both for shorebirds and for the American oystercatcher in particular.
