Reduction of coastal wetlands in Peru: recommendations and challenges for their conservation

Coastal wetlands are key ecosystems of the Peruvian coast, both for the biological diversity they harbor and for the ecosystem services they provide to local populations. However, their proximity to cities means that they are susceptible to anthropogenic disturbances that can affect their structure and lead to reductions in their surface area. A literature review revealed a documented total loss of 3,873.57 hectares (in les than 100 years), as well as a marked heterogeneity in existing legal conservation modalities. The development is recommended of an updated inventory and periodic monitoring system for coastal wetlands, with a particular focus on those in critical condition. In addition, strengthened local governance through community participation and management plans is required, together with the translating of scientific evidence into accessible technical inputs, in order to facilitate more effective public decision‑making for the conservation of these vital ecosystems.
