Abstract

Aquaculture biosecurity is a critical element for preventing pathogen introduction and spread in crustacean farming systems. In Peru, the lack of specific guidelines and comprehensive surveillance increases the risk of outbreaks and undermines sustainability. This policy brief highlights biosecurity as a cornerstone for aquaculture health, resilience, and international competitiveness, while identifying institutional gaps affecting non‑prioritized species and regions. Recommendations include 1) expanding health surveillance to all farmed crustacean species, regardless of their production scale, 2) strengthening community training, 3) designing graduated measures according to production category, and 4) linking practices to robust certification schemes. Implementing these actions will enhance compliance, reduce sanitary risks, and consolidate the global positioning of Peruvian aquaculture.
