This article addresses the under-analyzed issues facing older adults in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the significance of their participation in religious activities and its relationship to their quality of life. It begins with a review of the limited research on older adults from the perspectives of psychology, sociology, social work, and anthropology. The few studies that have analyzed the influence of participation in religious practices on the well-being of older adults are discussed. Paradigms surrounding older adults in the 20th century are also addressed. The objective was to analyze the influence of participation in religious leadership roles at the community level on the well-being of older adults in the Arica and Parinacota Region. The methodology is qualitative, employing multiple case studies and secondary sources. The study population consists of seven rural Aymara communities located in the high Andean and pre-Andean areas of the Arica and Parinacota Region (Camarones commune: Guañacagua village; Putre commune: Putre, Chucullo, and Guallatiri villages and the Ungalliri ranch; General Lagos commune: Visviri village and the Columa and Guayancayane ranches). Participants of both sexes were selected from these communities. Twelve specialists in Andean health were interviewed. From the sociocultural contexts of the Arica-Parinacota Region (Chile), we illustrate the different roles that older adults fulfill in religious institutions: in some Pentecostal churches, or as representatives and leaders of ancestral Aymara traditions, such as community health specialists. They can be considered «living human treasures,» and their quality of life raises new questions.
