Risk Management in Social Research: Elements for Ethical Procedures

The ethical milestones of biomedical research established the foundations for human protection; however, their rigid application generates tensions that hinder social research by ignoring its situated nature. Consequently, ethics committees must conduct efficient and effective reviews. This essay analyzes the evolution of ethical criteria in knowledge production, highlighting the complex transition from the biomedical model to the social sciences. The objective is to propose elements of ethical analysis focused on risk management for participants, designed to guide researchers and evaluators through a critical literature review. Two axes are proposed: the researcher’s competencies and the participant's dimensions (vulnerability, well-being, sensitive information, and their role as a collaborator), which together form the «risk control ring.» It is concluded that the ethical approach to social risk requires procedures that are both sensitive and agile, as well as reflective.
