Abstract

Objective: The aim of this investigation is to review in the literature, the long-term stability of different orthodontic treatments to correct the open bite in patients with permanent dentition. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was made oin four databases (PubMed, Elsevier, Science Direct, Google Scholar) and two specialized journals (AJODO, Angle Orthodontics) until May 2024. The methodological quality of the studies was analyzed using the PRISMA checklist. Results: In this literature review, 22 studies were included, the studies were analyzed according to the different kind of treatments which provide long term stability to correct open bite like treatments with and without extractions, use of miniscrews, miniplates and orthognathic surgery. Conclusions: Patients treated with extractions, presented a better stability of open bite, depending on elements like crowding, vertical pattern and control of oral habits. Patients treated with miniscrews or miniplates, the mandible suffer a counterclockwise rotation after molar intrusion. Myofunctional therapy is essential to complete the stability of anterior open bite because tongue rest posture will be reeducated. In skeletal class II patients treated with orthognathic surgery have a higher risk of relapse in the absence of adequate muscular and condylar adaptation.
