Analysis of the role of educational technology in the reduction of school lag and dropout in Dominican Republic

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are fundamental in improving learning and reducing school dropout rates. This research analyses the impact of ICT use on improving digital skills in extended school day centers in the Municipality of Mao, Dominican Republic. A quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design was adopted. The sample included students selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using a validated questionnaire on digital competencies, applied in digital format. Statistical analyses were performed, including reliability tests, exploratory and confirmatory factor validity, and inferential tests to evaluate significant differences between sociodemographic variables. The results show that students possess a moderate to high level of digital literacy, demonstrating proficiency in using devices and basic tools but facing difficulties in problem-solving through ICT and critically evaluating information. It is concluded that ICT positively impacts school retention but requires more structured strategies. Strengthening teacher training in ICT and developing active methodologies to maximize their effectiveness in education is recommended.
